The Rooted Collective is a liberatory gathering of Black LGBTQ people to define, dream, and expand on the ways in which we heal from oppression and practice joy and pleasure. We root our work in the knowledge that healing for all Black people is political resistance.

Planet Rooted is a place for Black queer and trans people, imagined by members of the Rooted Collective in Baltimore, MD. The tree growing out of “Old Earth” is inhabited by Black queer people, and includes portals in the bark, fruit, and flowers of the tree. Old Earth’s core is where ancestors can be visited, and the tree’s tap root at the bottom of Old Earth is the only place on Planet Rooted that cannot be reached via a portal. This was a project with A Different Horizon, a series of drawings that depict collectively imagined 2SLGBTQAI+ utopias.

Black Same Gender Loving and LGBTQ people exist beyond borders and walls. We constantly find ways to love each other living in the midst of an oppression that attempts to silence us daily.
